Attitudes towards mental disorders in children and adolescents among elementary school children
Summary:
The present research is about attitudes towards mental disorders in children and adolescents among elementary school children. Students of the last two classes of two elementary schools in the south-east Attica completed a self-report questionnaire, which was made by the researcher based on previous researches, about their knowledge, beliefs, behavioral intensions, the degree of identification they feel with children and adolescents facing a mental disorder and which are the emotions roused. A small part of them was called to participate voluntarily in an individual interview with the researcher, in order to give them the opportunity to elaborate more on their thoughts and the perception they have about children and adolescents with mental disorders. During the interview students were also asked about the behavior of the whole school community in general, how they believe others would treat them if they faced during a period in their life a mental health problem and how they would like to be treated. Their answers indicate that students’ knowledge is incomplete, since not many discussions are made at school neither with their families, even if the majority of them knows someone with a mental disorder. However, they seem to adopt positive attitudes in general and to accept positive the possibility of visiting themselves a mental health professional, even if a parent or a teacher suggest them to do so. Although topics about social isolation and loneliness were quite common in their answers when referring to children and adolescents with mental health disorders, most students shared the same desire of helping and supporting them.
