Summary:
This current master thesis "Aspects from the Folk Culture of Chios Island" presents the creation of an educational cultural program for children at the age of 10 to 12 years old which can be implemented in a non formal learning environment. Through this learning procedure, the children are getting in touch with the local history of their Island, the folklore and the traditional techniques. In addition, the meaning of folk culture, the intangible cultural heritage and the safeguarding of the living aspects of folk culture in the present, during modern times can be perceived. In order to achieve this aim, four units are chosen which are the following ones: the know-how of cultivating mastic on the island of Chios, the Xysta at Pyrgi, the architecture and the citrus trees of Kampos and the New Year's Day custom of Steamboats. This educational program is based on the principles of cooperative teaching that are part of the project method and it is designed to take place both in teaching rooms (of non-formal education) as far as Museums.
