The geometry of fortifications or protection thanks to mathematics: Teaching Geometry in Elementary School using historical sources
Summary:
In this research, a presentation with historical sources on Jean Errard's work in the development of the geometry of fortifications was used in order to motivate students in the lesson of Mathematics, the understanding of the mathematical concepts of Geometry through Jean Errard's construction project and the creation of a positive attitude of students towards Mathematics. Participants were 14 students from a 4th grade class. The results presented in this paper come from worksheets, observations during teaching and a questionnaire. The students understood the reasons for the evolution of the forts with the help of Mathematics which acted as a positive motivation in the lesson of Geometry. Then, they constructed Jean Errard's hexagonal bastion fort and understood the geometric concepts involved. Finally, from the students' assessment on the History of Mathematics, it appears that its use positively influenced students' attitudes towards the lesson of Mathematics.
