Pedagogical design of laboratory exercises in a university environment for measurements in electrical circuits
Summary:
In the context of this thesis, during the modernization of the Circuits and Systems Laboratory of the Department of Computer Science and Telecommunications of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens with new laboratory equipment, educational material adapted to the new laboratory instruments was written in the form of laboratory exercises. Two semesters (academic year 2019-2020 and 2021-2022 respectively) were required for the development and formulation of the educational material. In particular, there were created exercises for voltage and current measurements using a digital multimeter, measurements with the oscilloscope and visualization of time-varying signals, as well as RC integration circuit - Filters. At the same time, the theoretical part of the laboratory exercises required as background was written, as well as manuals for the use of the new equipment.
The basis of the pedagogical approach for the development of the new educational material was the Exploratory Learning, incorporating selected elements from the Universal Design for Learning and selected principles of Distance Education. It includes action, experimentation, research and inquiry, argumentation and meaning-making, collaboration, the use of alternative forms and sources of educational material, as well as a modern and functional graphic design. The proposed educational material was tested under real conditions in the context of the educational process!
After studying and using the educational material, both old and new, in two different academic years, students were asked to evaluate it through questionnaires. Through the analysis of the questionnaires, the students' clear preference for the new educational material and its contribution to a better understanding of the laboratory exercises and the theoretical concepts of the course was evident. 75% of the students agreed that the new teaching material was more understandable, clear and explanatory than the old one. Also, 82% agreed that the appendices contained in the new material were more understandable and complete than those contained in the previous laboratory guide.
