The correlation of the advanced age of the mother with pregancy and delivery complications
Summary:
This systematic review aimed to examine the results of 18 studies investigating the risks and complications associated with late-term maternal pregnancies. The review revealed consistent evidence that advanced maternal age is associated with an increased risk of adverse pregnancy outcomes. Risks include gestational diabetes, pre-eclampsia, caesarean section, preterm delivery, low birth weight and chromosomal abnormalities.
The findings showed that the risks of these complications tend to escalate after the age of 35 years, with a significant increase after the age of 40 years. Various socio-demographic, lifestyle and obstetric factors were identified as contributing to these increased risks. Factors such as obesity, chronic diseases and the use of assisted reproductive technologies were found to play a significant role in the development of complications.
The implications of these results for clinical practice are important. Healthcare providers should prioritize comprehensive preconception counseling for women of advanced maternal age to discuss potential risks and provide guidance on healthy lifestyle choices. Close monitoring throughout the antenatal period is vital for early detection and management of any emerging complications. Individualised management plans should be drawn up, taking into account the specific needs and risks of each patient.
