Περίληψη:
The epidemiology of iron deficiency (ID) and of iron deficiency anemia (IDA) was studied in 289 Greek "healthy" children, aged 1/2 to 5 years and in 394 army recruits. Supplementary hematologic studies were done for identification and exclusion of individuals with β-thalassemia trait (8.4 per cent) and of those with G-6-PD deficiency (6 per cent). In children the prevalence of IDA was 33.6 per cent and of ID 43.9 per cent, as compared to 10 and 23.6 per cent, respectively, in army recruits. In children both IDA and ID decreased with increasing age. The degree and prevalence of ID in thalassemia trait and G-6-PD deficiency were similar to those in "healthy" individuals of the same ages. Our data show that even mild ID affects the Hb content and erythrocyte morphology to a minor degree; they also point to the need for more precise diagnostic criteria for IDA and ID, especially in certain age groups. © 1974 The C.
