Περίληψη:
In the context of structural changes going on in transitional Romania, but also in the context of EU accession and integration, as well as in the context of the recent global crises, it is interesting to look at the role of international remittances on the Romanian economy. Thus, the main research question that the current paper is trying to bring an answer to is: What are the effects of international remittances on the Romanian economy (after 1989)? The working hypothesis of the current paper is that in the context of the transition to a free market economy, as well as in the contexts of EU integration and harmonization, international remittances have been having a loud and visible impact on the Romanian economy.
As I elucidate upon the context by referring to both economic developments in the post-1989 era (Chapter 1) and Romania as a source country for labor migration (Chapter 2), I continue to explain international remittances as a direct consequence of migration, as well as their role on the Romanian economy (Chapters 3 and 4). Last, but not least, I conclude by also including some considerations regarding remittances and the limitations of the subject, as well as suggesting further possible lines of research.
The paper shows that the hypothesis is partly confirmed: remittances have been having a visible impact on the Romanian economy (and society) as a whole. The effects that financial remittances have on the Romanian economy are mostly positive and promote wealth and wellbeing. At a broader level, remittances have been contributing to the alleviation of poverty in Romania and to increasing well-being of its recipients. However, there are limitations and there is certainly room for improvement. It would be desirable for more attention to be paid to internal policies that could channel remittances into investment and sustainable development as well.
Last, but not least, it is worth mentioning that, along with financial remittances, there are also the social remittances (useful knowledge or patterns learned in the process of migration that migrants may carry back to the place of origin) that may have an effect on the socioeconomic landscape of Romania. There is a gap in the literature concerning the aspect of social remittances and their effect on Romania's development. Further research into the field would be highly desirable and recommended in order to complete the knowledge on the subject.
