Περίληψη:
Today, Japan is recognized as one of the industrialized countries in the world, especially in the realm
of economy. However, the history of Japanese modernization is relatively short in comparison with
other developed countries. It was the latter half of nineteenth century when the Meiji Restoration has
occurred, a political and social process in which Tokugawa shogunate system had collapsed and the
Edo period had come to an end of its 265 years of rule. Centralized government, Japanese capitalism
have begun to be formulated at that moment. In a mere 150 years since then, Japan has already experienced a number of drastic changes up to the present day.
Speaking of Japanese civilization, the practical progressesin technology tend to be focused, whereas
there was a remarkable transition in relation to ideology, ethics which would reflect the confusions
and conflicts that people experienced through the societal and economic changes. One would say that
there are few countries who have accomplished a modernization in such a short period. Japan has
experienced so many changes that some people would not even think that the civilizations we take
for granted today such as capitalism, democracy, industrialized technology have appeared quite recently in the history.
Furthermore, the anxiety that people had under the turbulent society in the late Edo period, which
was just in front of the Meiji Restoration show remarkable similarity to what we assume to be typical
problems of present age as well. Certainly, our predecessors at that age would not anticipate the tragic
World War Ⅱ and subsequent occupation by the United States which would also leave the deep
influence to Japan to this date, however, we could still see that the transition that Japan has experienced before and after the Meiji Restoration would continuously form the basis of today’s Japanese
economic society. Therefore, I would like to suggest that it is beneficial to reinterpret the transition
of Japanese society in this era through the eye of iconic person, Shibusawa Eiichi, would bring about
not only a historical lesson but also a clue to construct a proposal for the present problems that we
are facing.
