Shifting Light: the politics of representation and the impact on the sacred topography of Hellenistic Delos

Situated in the prime position between east and west, and southern and northern Aegean, Delos in the Hellenistic period accommodated pilgrims, inhabitants, merchants and occasionally troops. This dissertation analyses the politics of representation within the confines of the sanctuary in veneration of Phoibos Apollo, Artemis and Leto. Focusing on dedication by Hellenistic kings, the subsequent impact on the Delian sacred landscape is explored. Both the physical ramifications of such benefactions and contributions are studied as well as the effects on the cultic and sacred experience of those visiting the sanctuary. Beginning with consideration of the history of Delos, the mythology surrounding the island as well as the first architectural contributions to the sanctuary, this study incorporates Delos’ past in order to contextualise its position in the Hellenistic epoch and simultaneously during the island’s own period of independence from political authority. By determining continuities and contrasts in the forms of construction and display from early times, the nuance of royal representation in the Hellenistic can be analysed.
