Περίληψη:
This thesis explores the townscape of Gournia, a unique Bronze Age urban settlement in Crete, often referred to as the “Minoan Pompeii.” While Gournia is the only near-fully excavated site of its kind, its urban development during the Neopalatial Period has remained underexplored. This study aims to analyze Gournia’s townscape in detail and compare it with two other well-explored and nearby significant Neopalatial sites, Mochlos and Pseira, to elucidate Gournia's distinctive characteristics within its urban context.
The study's starting point is a comprehensive overview of Gournia's location, urban features, and historical development, outlining its intricate layout centred around the Palace and a network of streets and plazas that were the venues of community interaction. The analysis extends to Mochlos and Pseira, highlighting their unique topographies and settlement features, which reflect different societal structures and functions.
Key comparisons reveal broad cultural similarities among the sites, yet emphasize significant differences in urban design, the role of public spaces, and social dynamics. Gournia's coherent layout and the apparent absence of elite differentiation outside the palace arguably suggest a more egalitarian community compared to the more – or differently – stratified settlements of Mochlos and Pseira. The findings also address the shifts in stability and authority among these sites, particularly in the context of Gournia's decline during Late Minoan IB.
Ultimately, this thesis argues for a nuanced understanding of each site’s historical trajectory, illustrating how Gournia represents a dynamic community shaped by both gradual changes and significant disruptions, but also by conceptual continuities. This analysis contributes to the broader discourse on Minoan urbanism and enhances our understanding of the complexities of Neopalatial social organization.
